Yesterday, April 16th at 18:58 hours, a strong earthquake of magnitude 7,4 shook the northern of Ecuador, in La Esmeralda, causing a significant impact in the population.    

Since 10:00 hours of April 17th, the authorities have confirmed 233 dead, 588 wounded, 269 buildings destroyed, 89 buildings affected. Six provinces are in state of emergency: Manabí, Esmeraldas, Santa Elena, Guayas, Santo Domingo and Los Ríos. Pedernales (40,000 inhabitants) was declared as “The Zone of Disaster” and the access is limited due to the infrastructure damages.

The rescue teams are working in the affecting area but the time is critical. The Government in Ecuador has declared the state of emergency nationally and has requested the support of the United Nations in order to complement the national efforts that are assisting to the emergency. Also, has been requested a medical assistance to the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization, who have mobilized an emergency response team that is expected to arrive today Sunday in the affected zone in Ecuador. In addition, a National Disaster Response Team has been deployed in the emergency zone to assist to the affected population.     

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Movement has met in the Emergency Operational Center (COE in Spanish) in Panama, supporting response actions and coordinations with the Ecuadorian Red Cross. A technical team of the American Red Cross and the Federation has been deployed to support the Evaluation of Damages and Analysis of Needs (EDAN in Spanish).
